TCS Daily has "Profiles in Surrogacy" which I found to be an interesting and insightful bit of historical comparison about the current conflict in the world. It really is true about those who are doomed to repeat history. Can we ever learn?
That article describes exactly why I fear that this could evolve into WW3. Iranian crazy dude is somewhat analogous to German crazy dude (Hitler) in ideology, etc. Just last night I was thinking about how complacent Americans got after the 'Fall of Communism' and the end of the Cold War. Or at least, that was our perception because for so long all our focus was on that and so when it was 'gone' we thought all our international problems were over. Clinton exploited that and encouraged Americans to feel safe, secure, and prosperous. But it was during that time that Bin Laden was also taking advantage of this. The 1993 WTC attack was not dealt with severely enough which gave OBL encouragement to plan even bigger attacks. I've always suspected that Iran and Korea were in collusion, and I suspect that it doesn't stop with those two. And I think that in many ways we are now paying for our false sense of security that Clinton fostered and exploited.
